Problem With My Site

Hello!
When I visited my site, recently, I found that all of the commas, quotation-marks, and apostrophes in my texts had been replaced with question marks.
Could you please explain how this happened? I have already started restoring the site, but it's going to be a long and laborious business.
Naturally, I'm interested in whether this will happen again after I restore the site, what caused the problem, and whether my site is secure.
