The advantages of fort myers beach

Fort Myers Beach - Estero Island and San Carlos Island in Lee County, Florida together, form the town of Fort Myers Beach with a population of around 7,000 people. Many people just live here for the winter and tourists contribute to the economy. It’s a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts, artists and bird watchers. It’s a great town for nightlife with lots of places to hear live music, including rock, blues, jazz and reggae. The choice of bars and restaurants is varied, such as an English theme pub, a rum bar and a sushi bar.

The flora and fauna of the area is colorful and attracts nature lovers from afar. The mild climate allows for all year blooming of bougainvilleas, hibiscus and poncianas. Palm trees sway and clusters of sea grapes hang above. Birds most commonly seen include herons, sandpipers and roseate spoonbills. Off shore, there are sightings of porpoises and tarpon.

The Ortego Bay Marine Science Center on Fisherman’s Wharf on San Carlos Island has displays, aquariums and exhibitions, with an opportunity to see starfish, turtles and sharks. The center is an important research facility and has surveyed the local Fort Myers Beach area’s population of manatees and bottlenose dolphins. Lovers Key State Park is the place to go for relaxation or exercise. Kayaks and bicycles are available for hire or you can go fishing or walking through the woods. There are bathhouses, picnic areas and an excellent beachfront from which to observe marine life.

Entertainment, dining and shopping is available at the pedestrian only, Times Square Fort Myers Beach Pier. Beach Seafood is a seafood market and restaurant, where the local catch can be sampled including the shrimps. Solving murder mysteries is very popular and this can be combined with dinner on the Seminole Gulf Railway’s Murder Mystery Dinner Train. The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is the venue for dinner with a famous musical show.

For lovers of history, there is much to learn and the Fort Myers Cultural Museum and Environmental Learning Center is a good place to start. The Calusa Indians were present in the area and a three acre Calusa Shell Mound can be seen, which is of national archeological interest. The museum has got lots of information on the ecological development of the region. Another insight into the Fort Myers Beach past is found at the Southwest Florida Museum of History. There are exhibits and artifacts from prehistory to today and visitors can go on walking tours or guided bus tours.
