German Chocolate - We all have our favorite food or foods. This is usually a food that brings back a memory of a happy time or event. Food has a way of doing this because it involves so many of our senses; the sense of taste, smell and sight. For some people this is the same reason that they dislike a food, because it is associated with a bad or sad time. I cannot look at cottage cheese without being reminded of eating at the cafeteria of the hospital where my father was in a coma for fifty eight days. Every day when we ate at the cafeteria we had to walk past the small tan bowls that had a scoop of cottage cheese in it with a pineapple ring on top. Later when my father came out of his coma and we had to help him eat he would have the cottage cheese on his hospital tray.
For my husband his happy memory of food is German chocolate cake. He is not usually a sweets eater, but he has a weakness for german chocolate cake. I did not know this until we were married for several months. For his birthday I was planning on making a nice dinner and baking him a cake. I ended up having to work late the evening before his birthday and also the day of his birthday. On my way home I stopped at a bakery to pick up a cake. They only had a few left to pick from because it was late in the day. The clerk told me that the german chocolate cake had been made that afternoon for a special order and then the person called and cancelled. The cake looked really good so I had them box it up to take it home.
When I got home I made a pasta dish that my husband loves and that is quick to prepare. I transferred the german chocolate cake to a pedestal cake plate that we had received as a wedding gift. The cake was quite large so I called his best friend and his new wife and asked if they wanted to come over after dinner for dessert. I had enough time to set the table before my husband arrived home from work. When he walked in and saw the cake he asked if I had talked to his mother. I told him no, and asked why he thought I did. He said that german chocolate is his favorite thing and that he always requested this cake for his birthday. He admitted that his mother’s did not look nearly as fancy as the bakery cake.
After dinner our friends came over to share the cake with us. My husband’s friend had bought him a german chocolate candy bar on a recent trip to Germany. It seemed that everyone knew about his love for german chocolate, but me.
