Learn about iceland vacation

Iceland Vacation - People are willing to go further afield for a unique experience and tourists are increasingly going on an Iceland vacation. The climate is surprisingly temperate, the people are welcoming and the scenery is very beautiful. The winters are mild but can be windy and the summers are cool and damp. It’s best to go in the summertime to take advantage of the long hours of daylight, in fact you can look at a midnight sun.

This island of glaciers is full of volcanoes, geysers (hot springs), lakes and spas. It is one of the most geologically active places on the planet. Most people speak English and the currency is the Icelandic Krona. Icelandair is the main airline and has runs to several European cities and US destinations, including New York, San Francisco and Boston (in summer). Water sports are popular on an Iceland vacation and winter snowmobiling and dog sledging.

Most tourists base themselves in the largest city and capital, Reykjavik when on an Iceland vacation. The city itself has much to offer and there are a number of excursions that go to other areas. The Old Town has beautiful, unspoiled streets and buildings. The National Museum is here and the National Cathedral. For the best view of the city, the top of the Perlan Water Towers has a viewing area and a rotating restaurant. Boat trips from the harbor can be booked to see whales, dolphins and puffins when in season. The nearest geysers are just one hour’s drive away. The city is renowned for its nightlife and has many lively clubs and bars. Local restaurants are on the expensive side but there are cheaper fast food options. There are also inexpensive, family run Thai restaurants.

There are many scenic wonders to behold on the island. The Dettifoss Waterfall in the National Park of Jokulsargljufur is said to be the most powerful falls in Europe, with a 44 meter drop. The Thingvellir National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and is popular with nature lovers. The lake is full of brown trout and it’s possible to see white-tailed eagles, foxes and minks. There are camping grounds and lots of hiking trails to follow. No Iceland vacation is complete without a dip in a hot spring and the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to try one out. The relaxing waters are a favorite tourist destination and there are also saunas and mud baths to enjoy.
