Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing - When my uncle invited me on a Lake Michigan salmon fishing trip, I was overjoyed. I had never been salmon fishing on Lake Michigan before, and I had always wanted to go. My father was never much of an outdoorsman. He didn’t really like camping. He liked to be able to sleep in his own bed every night, a sentiment that I could understand. Nonetheless, I had missed out on a lot of adventure growing up – a lot of adventures that my cousins got to go on. Salmon fishing in Lake Michigan was just one of the many things that they did. They would go hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and white water rafting. To say that I was jealous was an understatement!
So when they invited me along to a salmon fishing Lake Michigan trip, I jumped at the chance. We drove up to Traverse City on the first day of July, and chartered a boat there. Traverse City is not exactly a paradise for Lake Michigan salmon fishing, but we had a good deal on a boat rental up there. My uncle knew the guy, and he hooked us up at a very reasonable price. We were going to be gone for about seven days, so it was important to get the best boat that we could get. This boat was beautiful.
Unfortunately, our first day of Lake Michigan salmon fishing was pretty uneventful. It was nice to be out on the water of course, but there was very little breeze at all and nothing was biting. Then that evening, it suddenly picked up. It wasn’t blowing too strong until the next morning, but then it was really going! Like Michigan salmon fishing in that much wind is difficult. It is actually difficult just to sail the boat. Nonetheless, we hoisted up the sails, raised the anchor, and took off. Somehow, despite the wind, our second day of Lake Michigan salmon fishing was extremely successful. Between the group of us, we caught five fish – enough to last us that night and the night after besides. They were all great, big, beautiful salmon too!
The rest of our Lake Michigan salmon fishing trip wasn’t quite that productive. Most days, we would only catch a fish or two. Nonetheless, we had plenty to eat and a great time. The sailing was good, the weather held out, and it was a chance to get out and experience the great outdoors.
