Outdoor Fire Pit - We live on a very large lake in central Minnesota. We enjoy having company come for weekends to go fishing. We have found out that there are many times when we are not able to go out fishing because of the wind. The lake is twenty six miles across so it often creates it own weather patterns. What may be a slight breeze in other areas, can result in white caps on the lake. One of the things we make sure to do is to have a back up plan for company if the fishing is not possible. One thing that we did is put in an outdoor fire pit. This is a great way to spend an evening with company or neighbors.
We created our outdoor fire pit by buying a large fire ring that is made out of metal. We also bought fire proof bricks that we laid in a square which is about six inches wider than the ring. This allows for easier ash removal as well as easier access to mow around. We bought a park bench and two rocking chairs to place around the outdoor fire pit. It is amazing how relaxing it is to sit around the fire and watch the stars come out. My husband dug through our camping equipment and found the tri-pod that we used to place over camp fires. The middle of the tripod has a movable grill on so you can warm a coffee pot or you can lower the grill and cook steaks or burgers on it. The meat has a great flavor when it is cooked over an open wood fire. Our outdoor fire pit has become a gathering spot for neighbors.
We had a very hot summer so we did not use the outdoor fire pit very much. Now we are back into early fall so the day light hours are getting shorter and there is also a feeling of fall in the air. A few nights ago we decided that we would build a fire in the outdoor fire pit. We made a pot of coffee and carried out some extra cups in case any of the neighbors joined us. It was two nights after the full moon so the moon beam on the water was still spectacular.
We were sitting outside for about half an hour before the neighbors on the west side of our house walked over. They each had a drink and also brought along some marshmallows for roasting. My neighbor said that he was hungry for something sweet and had just complained to his wife that they did not have anything for dessert when they saw our fire. I told him that I had graham crackers and chocolate bars but we did not have the marshmallows. We visited and ate s’mores and watched the moonbeams dance on the water. It sure beat sitting in the house watching television.
